Words have great power. They can give rise to the immense hidden potential within all of us. Repeating carefully constructed sentences can affect our behaviour, habits, mentality and our whole lives. It is these sentences that are called affirmations.
The very way the word is made defines what it is about. The word “affirm” means “to declare” and it entails making assertions about things that we would like to manifest in our lives.

Our conscious minds are just the tip of the proverbial iceberg, while the bulk of it (the subconscious mind) remains hidden below the surface. It is here where the magic happens.
When something is repeated often enough, our subconscious minds start perceiving it as the truth. So, if we have repeated thoughts of inadequacy, the subconscious mind will believe it and all of our thinking patterns and actions will be influenced by this belief.
But, if we repeat positive affirmations, the subconscious mind will take all of that as the new reality and adjust everything about us accordingly. It is then that we manifest the same in our physical reality as well.
Do Affirmations Work While Sleeping?
It might surprise many people to know that during sleep, there are times when the mind remains open to receiving new information. Scientists are still trying to understand the secrets of sleep and how everything works, but it has been shown that the brain is even more active while we are sleeping.
During sleep, it does a whole host of important things, without which we wouldn’t be able to function. One of the most important ones is arranging information.
When we go to sleep by listening to affirmation audios, we are feeding them to the subconscious mind. Even if we fall asleep, that part of our minds keeps receiving the information.
In fact, just before sleep, we enter a “hypnotic state” where these affirmations are taken as suggestions by the subconscious mind.
Doing this every day concretizes these affirmations into the deeper part of the mind. And when these become the dominant subconscious thoughts, our lives truly happen the way we want them to happen.
How To Do Daily Affirmations?
Creating affirmations that work for us as individuals is a work of art. We all have our own unique desires and wants that we wish to see fulfilled, and so our affirmations will differ from each other as well. But the basic formula remains the same.
The first step is to write down affirmations for all the different things we want. Make sure these are written in the present tense and it is better if they start with the words “I am” although this isn’t completely necessary.
For example, if we want money, we could use affirmations like “I am ready to receive money into my life.” or “I am a money magnet.” Since we will be saying these affirmations every single day, we need to really nail them down.
Once we have our affirmations written down for all the things we want, we should take a moment to relax. Deep breathing works best for this purpose.
Then we need to say the affirmations with as much conviction as possible. It is better to say them slowly and clearly. Some people suggest standing in front of a mirror and then saying them to ourselves. We should do whatever we are the most comfortable with.
One important thing to remember is that repetition is key. Zig Ziglar once said, “Repetition is the mother of learning, the father of action, which makes it the architect of accomplishment.” So, it’s good to do these “sessions” more than once in a day.
How Many Affirmations Per Day?
There are no hard and fast rules as to how many affirmations we can say in a day. There are a lot of factors involved and it will be different for each individual.
For someone who just wants one thing, there will naturally be only a handful of affirmations, but for someone who wants ten different things, they will have much more of these.
The salient point here is that we should only say as many affirmations as we can say with total conviction in a single session. If there are a lot of them, it could start feeling like a chore.
We might also feel like rushing them so that we can get to our other daily tasks. At that point, we might as well not do it because then, it wouldn’t seep into the subconscious mind.
For best results, we can say four to five affirmations for each thing we want. That way even if we have say, five different desires, there would only be twenty to twenty-five affirmations.
Again, the key is not the number of these, but the way we say them. Even if the reality around us is the exact opposite of what we want, we should say the affirmations like they are already real. That is when they will actually work.
When Is The Best Time To Say Affirmations?
There isn’t really a cookie-cutter answer for this. We all have our own individual routines and so the best times to say affirmations will differ from one person to the other. Also, it might take a few days to get the times just right, and a little adjustment in our routines may be necessary.
Before we allot certain time slots for saying them, however, we must keep in mind one very important thing. Our state of mind plays a huge role while saying these affirmations.
We must choose those times when we can be totally relaxed and focused on what we are saying. There might be times during the day, like when we are at work when our minds can be completely occupied by other things. It’s best to not say affirmations during such times.
Most people set mornings and night time to do their rituals. In the morning, our minds are totally relaxed and are not filled with too many thoughts. At night time, before bed, we are once again relaxed and can completely surrender to the flow of positive vibes.
These are the best times for most people. But we can also keep repeating them throughout the day if we feel the need for some motivation. It all depends on what feels right for us as individuals.
Do Daily Affirmations Have To Be Said Out Loud?
Depending on who we ask, we will get different answers to this. Some will tell us that we can sit in silence and say the affirmations in our mind or heart rather than saying them out loud.
This might work for them and there is nothing that says this shouldn’t work, but for most people, it is better to say them out loud.
Our minds react more to things that are able to engage our various senses. That’s why we react so vigorously to our favourite food because it engages our eyes, nose and taste buds.
It only makes sense to use as many sensory organs as possible while conducting our daily ritual. When we say affirmations out loud, it just has a whole different effect on our mind and body. If we say them with conviction, we can even feel the energy surge throughout our bodies.
Of course, there are times and places where we cannot say them out loud and it is in these places and times when we can say them in our heads. But while we are at home, it makes more sense to say them out loud and feel every word as it if were already true.
How Long Do Affirmations Take To Work?
As with all our other efforts, the effects of affirmations can take some time to materialise. Nobody can say for sure exactly when the positive changes will begin to happen.
For some, it might happen on the same day and for others, it might take a month. There are a lot of factors at play here.
We shouldn’t dwell too much on when things will start happening and should simply keep saying our affirmations daily and should try to remain as positive as possible. Also, we shouldn’t let any negative thoughts and emotions take root in our minds.
Eventually, things will change for the better. As with most things, patience is key. It can be difficult to have some, especially if we are in a dire situation, but it is important to persevere.
